The
Santa Clara River is the largest river system in Southern California
remaining in a relatively natural state. The Santa Clara River
flows in a westerly direction for approximately 84 miles through
Tie Canyon, Aliso Canyon, Soledad Canyon, the Santa Clarita
Valley, the Santa Clara River Valley, and the Oxnard Plain
before discharging to the Pacific Ocean near the Ventura Harbor.
The Santa Clara River and tributary system covers about 1634 square miles.
Major tributaries include Castaic Creek and San Francisquito Creek in Los Angeles
County, and the Sespe, Piru, and Santa Paula Creeks in Ventura County. Approximately
40 percent of the Watershed is located in Los Angeles County and 60 percent
is in Ventura County.
